Background

Simon has over 25 years of research experience spanning physics, chemistry, and biology. He has conducted research at many high-ranking international institutions in Australia, Germany, France, and Poland.

Research themes

The lab conducts interdisciplinary research covering diverse areas, including protein misfolding, (bio)inorganic chemistry, and free radicals in biological and materials sciences.

Physical methods: electronic absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging, fluorescence polarisation spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, density functional theory.

Chemical methods: spin labelling, spin trapping, functional fluorescence assays (ROS detection, enzyme activity, protein aggregation), synthetic vesicle assays, NIR fluorescence imaging probes.

Biological methods: mammalian cell culture, immunological techniques (western blot, ELISA, IF/IHC, immuno-spin trapping, immunoprecipitation).

Lab facilities

Key instrumentation includes:

  • EPR spectrometer (Adani CMS-8400)
  • Fluorescence/luminescence/polarisation microplate reader (POLARstar, BMG Labtech)
  • UV-vis absorption microplate reader/cuvette (SPECTROstar, BMG Labtech)
  • Fluorescence spectrometer (LS 55, Perkin Elmer)
